With
his icy stare and hyper-aggressive playing style, Phil
Ivey is quite simply the most feared poker player in the
world. Whether the game is No Limit Texas Hold’em,
7-Card Stud, or Go Fish, Ivey is the clear favourite
whenever he sits down. Whether he is up or down, Phil
comes at you and never stops. Watching him play is like
being in the eye of a hurricane.
Biggest
Poker Accomplishment:
Won 3 WSOP bracelets in 2002, at the ripe old age of 23.
Only 2 other players have ever won 3 bracelets in the
same year. In total, Phil has 6 bracelets and he is not
yet 30 years of age – a truly scary thought.
Playing
Style:
Relentlessly aggressive. Will play any 2 cards and play
them like aces. Phil always bets and raises in spite of
his holding, making it nearly impossible to put him on a
hand.
Strengths:
Reads opponents like no other player. Also, he never
lets his emotions or bad beats get the best of him. He
is calm and cool at the table, always. Getting a tell
off Phil just doesn’t happen.
Weaknesses:
No real weaknesses to speak of, but his busy cash game
schedule means he sometimes plays tournaments worn out.
Phil often says it is difficult to remain motivated when
he plays for a tournament prize pool that is smaller
than a big pot in his cash game.
Tournament
Winnings: Just
over $6 million to date.
The
Bottom Line:
Phil is also a top cash game player, regularly taking
part in the biggest games in the world. Phil likes to
say that you break your cherry the first time you get
stuck $1 million in a single session. No word on what
you call it when you get up a million, but if anybody
knows its phil.
