Brunson
is poker’s greatest living legend, still going strong
at over 70 years of age. Doyle has been a consistent
winner in tournaments and side games for over 35 years,
in addition to conducting himself like a consummate
gentleman every step of the way. Doyle is Arnold Palmer,
Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, all rolled into one.
Biggest
Poker Accomplishment:
Won 2 consecutive World Championships, in 1977 and 1978,
and then proceeded to finish 2nd in 1980.
Owns 10 WSOP bracelets, tying him with Johnny Chan for
the most ever.
Playing
Style:
Innovated the tight-aggressive playing style. Patient,
calculating player who makes his big hands count. At one
time, Doyle was the most aggressive player in the game
– forcing opponents to “make decisions for all of
their chips.” But he has brilliantly tempered his
style over the years to account for opponents
overplaying their hands against him.
Strengths:
Experience and table demeanour. Has played more hands of
poker than any other man, and never loses sight of the
bigger picture. This man does not tilt out, or let his
emotions lead him into unprofitable situations.
Weaknesses:
Stamina has tended to lag in recent years, due to his
advanced age and lack of physical fitness. Week long
tournaments take their toll on his focus.
Tournament
Winnings:
Almost $4.4 million.
The
Bottom Line: It
is well known that Doyle Brunson won his 2 World
Championships when he made full houses holding the same
hand – 10 2. What isn’t as well known is that in
both years he was behind after the flop, and proceeded
to hit runner-runner to fill up. Further proof that you
have to be lucky and good.
