Poker Dictionary - Terms And Definitions

Rack – Plastic container that holds 100 chips.

Rail – The barrier surrounding a poker table. When a player is eliminated, they are sent to the rail.

Rainbow – A flop or final board that contains different suits, meaning no flush is possible.

Rag – Weak, unplayable cards. A rag flop is generally one that contains low unsuited cards.

Rake – Percentage of money taken from each pot by the card room, as compensation for hosting the game and providing a dealer.

Raise – Increase the size of a previous player’s bet.

Read – To determine the range of hands that another player is holding. Reading is a very important skill that is developed over time.

Re-buy – Fixed amount of chips added to a player’s stack in exchange for cash in certain pre-determined tournaments.

Represent – To make a bluff, pretending to have a much bigger hand than you actually do. For instance, representing a flush when three suited cards are out.

Reraise – To raise a player that has already raised.

Respect – To give an opponent credit for holding a big hand.

Ring Game – A cash game that players can buy into and leave whenever they wish.

River – Final community card dealt face up, accompanied by the final betting round.

Rivered – When a player loses on the final card, they have been rivered.

Rock – Tight, conservative player that only starts with premium hands.

Rolled-up – Starting a Stud game with three of a kind, with two of the cards concealed as down cards.

Rounders – Professional players who go from game to game to make a living. Rounders is also the title of the seminal poker movie from the 1990’s.

Royal Flush – Best possible hand in poker, a straight flush to the ace.

Runners – The players in a game can also be referred to as runners. “We’ve got 10 runners tonight.”

Runner-Runner – When a player hits two perfect cards on the turn and river to make a hand. For instance, hitting two suited cards to make a runner-runner flush.

Running Bad – A player on a prolonged losing streak is running bad.

Running Good – A player on a prolonged winning streak is running good.

Rush – A player catching good cards and winning more than their share of pots is on a rush.
