Dark Bet – Making a bet without looking at one’s hole cards.

Dead Blind – When a player is eliminated right before they are scheduled to post a blind, there is a dead blind.

Dead Man’s Hand – Two pair, aces over 8s. This is the hand that Wild Bill Hickok was holding when he was shot in the back during a poker game.

Dead Money – A weak player who has no chance of winning.

Deal – The act of distributing cards to the players at the table.

Dealer – Person designated to distribute cards to the players at the table. The dealer also puts out the community cards and keeps track of all bets.

Deuce – The 2 card, of any suit.

Dealer’s Choice – Situation in home games in which the dealer chooses the game to be played.

Dirty Beat – When a player suffers a particularly bad beat.

Discards – The cards a player throws away during a hand.

Door Card – First up card in a Stud game.

Dog – Short form for underdog, when a player is behind in a hand.

Dolly Parton – Having 9 5 in the hole, in reference to the big titted singer’s 1980’s film.

Dominated – Holding a hand with duplicate cards to another hand, and in the process being a big underdog. For instance, holding A8 when another player has AK.

Double Suited – Expression used in Omaha, to describe when a player holds two different suited cards in the hole.

Double Up – When a player increases their chip stack by (at least) 100% in one hand. To double up, a player must go all in, get called and win the showdown. Also known as double through.

Down Cards – Also known as hole cards – dealt face down to a player.

Doyle Brunson – 10 2 off suit in the hole. So named because Doyle Brunson made a full house with this hand to win two consecutive World Series Championships in the 1970’s.

Draw – When a player needs a card to make their hand they are on a draw. Draw also describes the betting round in 5 Card Draw when a player discards up to 3 cards in their hand in exchange for new ones.

Draw For Seats/Deal – Method of determining where players will sit at the table and who will deal first. The most common method of drawing is pulling the high card from the deck.

Drawing Dead – When a player cannot win a pot with any card they are drawing dead.

Draw Out – To come from behind with a worse hand to beat a better hand. An example would be hitting a straight card on the river to win.

Ducks – Pocket 2s.
