Poker Dictionary - Terms And Definitions

A

ABC – A predictable opponent who plays by the book. ABC players are generally tight and easy to read.

A.I. Mode – Slang for a player who is very low on chips. They have only one move – push it all-in.

AT & T – Slang for a calling station – a player who calls far too many bets.

Ace in the Hole – In a stud game, when a player has an ace as one of their down cards. An ace in the hole is always a good thing.

Ace-high – A poker hand that contains an ace but no pair. This type of hand rarely wins a showdown.

Ace-rag – A poker hand containing an ace and a small card, for instance A4.

Aces Full – A full house with three aces over any other pair.

Aces Up – A hand containing two pair, of which one pair is aces.

Act – When the action is on a player (option to check, bet or raise), it is their turn to act.

Action – Indicates loose play – a propensity to gamble.

Add-on – The option for a player to purchase more chips at the conclusion of the rebuy period in a tournament.

Advertise – Playing loosely early in a session, with the intention of tightening up later and getting extra action.

After Hours – Private games played after a casino or card room is closed. These games usually take place in basements or bars.

A-game – When someone is playing their best poker, they have brought their A-game to the table.

Aggressive – Players that frequently raise or re-raise, constantly putting pressure on their opponents.

Ahead – If a player has won a lot of money in a session they are said to be ahead. Furthermore, if a player has the best hand heading to the river, they are ahead.

All-in – When a player puts of all of their chips in the pot.

All-in Over the Top – When a player raises an opponent’s bet by putting all of their chips in the middle. When a player moves all-in over the top they cannot be bluffed.

All-in Protection – Protects a player from being bet out of a pot. For instance, if you only have $9 left and a player bets $20, you are entitled to $9 of the total pot.

American Airlines – Pocket aces. The best starting hand in Texas Hold’Em.

Anna Kournikova – AK in the hole. It looks so pretty but it never wins.

Announced Bet – A verbal, binding declaration by a player of their intention to bet a hand.

Ante – Money put into the pot by each player before any cards are dealt.

Apple – Another word for an ace.

Apple Jack – AJ in the hole.

Artist – A player that is cheating by manipulating the deck. Examples of this include dealing from the bottom of the deck or falsely shuffling to ensure big cards are dealt to a certain player.

A-x Suited – Refers to an ace and a suited undercard, for instance A 7 of clubs.
