Omaha High Low
Omaha High-Low
/ 8-Or-Better is a variation of regular
Omaha
. All of the same rules and betting formats of
regular
Omaha
apply, except the pot is split between the high
hand and the low hand. Aces can be used for both
high hands and low hands, while straights and
flushes do not affect low hand values. The best
high hand is the Royal Flush, while the best low
hand is A-2-3-4-5, followed by A-2-3-4-6. The
same player can win both the high and low pot,
and if there is no qualifying low hand (a hand
in which all five cards are 8 or lower) the high
hand drags the whole pot.
1.
First
Betting Round (Pre-Flop) - Each player receives four
cards face down - his or her hole cards. At this
round, there are two players who must put money
in the pot (post blinds) - the small blind and
big blind. The two blinds are situated directly
to the left of the dealer. Starting to the left
of the big blind, the other players can elect to
not play the hand (fold) call/limp (post the
minimum blind amount) or raise. In Omaha, players can elect to bet or raise all of their
money at any time, although all raises must be
equal to or greater than the previous bet or
raise. The only exception to this rule is when a
player is all-in and doesn’t have enough chips
to match the previous bet or raise.
2.
Second Betting Round (The Flop) – After
burning a card, the dealer puts out three
community cards face up. This is called the flop.
The small blind is the first player to act, with
the option to check, bet the amount of the big
blind at the time, or any amount above that. Each
subsequent player has the option to fold, call the
first bet or raise (at least the amount of the
bet). The dealer, or button, is the last player to
act. The button is the best position at a poker
table.
3.
Third Betting Round (The Turn) – Another
card is burned, and then the dealer puts out a
fourth card face up. This is called the turn. The
same betting format as previous rounds follows.
4.
Fourth Betting Round (The River) –
Another card is burned, and then the dealer puts
out a fifth card face up. This is called the
river. The same betting format as previous rounds
follows.
5.
Who Wins? The Showdown – Any players that
have remained in the hand until the river must now
show their hand. The bettor or last raiser must
show first. The player with the best five-card
combination of hole and community cards wins the
pot (In
Omaha
, players must use two hole cards and three
community cards). As noted above, the high hand
takes half of the pot and the low hand takes the
other half. When two players have the same hand,
the pot is divided evenly among them.
